How To Develop Elite Ball Quickness
One challenge that many players face is that they will somewhere down the line go up against an athlete that is bigger, longer, stronger and faster. We can only control our athleticism to a certain extent. But, there are certain skills you can develop that level the playing field
One of them is ball quickness to be more effective attacking off the dribble. A quicker ball will make you quicker. And, even if you are a great athlete, you are only as quick as you are with the basketball.
In this episode of The Inside Out, Mike takes you through a series of practical tennis ball drills to develop ball quickness.

Breakdown Drills for Immediate Game Carryover

It wasn’t until my after my junior year in high school that I was playing in an AAU tournament (yes AAU, there are great coaches there as well) that I ever learned anything about spacing the floor. I was on the wing in secondary transition with the dribbler coming towards me, when my coach yelled out, “get to the corner!”. I knew immediately why, but also dumbfounded at the fact that no one had...
World's Best Ball Screen Drill for High School Point Guards

There is a trickle down effect with everything in basketball. College players didn’t lift until Michael Jordan started to, and high schoolers never had a individual skills coach until Kobe did. And, over the past 10 years or so, the ball screen has made its way into the high school level. The challenge is most, players understand the basic concepts, but they don’t understand the coverages, and ...

One challenge that players have is they don’t have a variety of finishes around the rim. They might have 1 or 2 great moves, but especially as a smaller guard, you have to be creative around the rim. Because a great move is only a great move if it’s used in the correct situation. In this week’s episode of The Inside Out, we give you an inside look at your Point Guard Blueprint Academy, where we...

Even at the professional and college level, the game is about making reads. A lot of time players play too fast or make their minds up without reading the defender. In this episode of The Inside Out, we go through a scoring progression with some professional and college players. The goal is to provide players with “Go To” or default moves based on how the defender is guarding them. By created c...

Play The Game Don’t Do The Drill

A few years ago at our Coaches Academy in Milwaukee, we had one of my mentors, Forrest Larson, speak on individual instruction. He said something at this Academy that has resonated with me ever since. While players were going through a breakdown drill, he repeated over and over “Play the Game. Don’t Do The Drill”. I think this is a huge mistake so many players make, especially when working on g...
Pro Finishing Moves For the Helpside

A colleague of mine, Kyle Manary, who was the director of the Chris Paul Elite Backcourt camp for over a decade, shared some simple, but effective advice for from CP3 with me a few years ago. “Good players can go by their defender. Great players can go by their defender and make a play on the helpside because their defender is irrelevant” It’s so true, you have to be so good with the basketball...

4 Strategies Guaranteed to Elevate Your Game

The preseason is one of my favorite times of the year. Why? Because it was purely about the work. It wasn’t about exposure, evaluation or blow out summer league games. It was a time of the year you could really focus on just doing one thing. Improving your game. Use these 4 steps consistently over the next 8 week and I guarantee they’ll have an impact on your preseason preparation. Strategy We ...

Do you keep the same "1 2" initial foot placement and the same footwork as a right handed shooter when catching a pass in the right corner from someone on the right wing?

I was confused by the way you first demonstrated the setup (before the real time demonstrstions) with the left leg jumping in front and then the right leg moving first. Then, in all the real time demonstrations the right leg moved more to the side then o the front. And the left leg, rather than the right leg crossed over. The demonstrations were helpful and consistent but for the first.

I really wish I had UA-cam when I played (back in the mid 2000s). This is gold! As a 34 year old with 4 kids and a full time job trying to get back in (basketball) shape is extremely difficult. #2 is really hard to do. Nobody my age wants to wake up when I do to workout hard. #1 I naturally do because I'm detail-oriented but also because it gets me focused and motivated the night before as I start to envision the workout and it helps me not think about how awful I'm going to feel waking up at 5 AM to do the workout. #3 has helped a ton. I finally got those wireless headphones. Something about not being able to hear myself gasping for air when I'm dead tired helps me not even recognize it and I'm able to push harder. #4 helps me get programmed to know what to expect and see positive outcomes which helps me overcome anxiety about the game. Thanks for all your awesome content, Mike.
